What’s Really Holding You Back?

Have you ever wanted to make a big life change, so you do all the "right things"-- things the experts say to get results, but for some reason what worked for them doesn't seem to work for you?

I get it. I've been there.

There is nothing more frustrating than spending time, money, and willpower on doing something that is supposed to help you to NOT get the desired result.

I'm going to share a personal (and somewhat embarrassing) story with you to make my point.

In 2021 I had a surgery which removed part of my colon (sexy, I know). As you can imagine my gut health became incredibly dysregulated. Being the solution-focused person I am, I endeavored to fix myself, so I started doing all the things the gut health experts say you should-- I took probiotics, I ate kimchi and Greek yogurt, I limited anything inflammatory to the point that I eventually was eating nothing but a handful of foods, but still not seeing any changes in my gut health.

A couple months ago, I met a functional health nurse practitioner in a coaching community and decided to do a Gut Health Analysis to see what was really going on.

In our debrief meeting we reviewed my results, and I was shocked to find that all the things I had been doing to improve my gut health were actually harming me. Given that I had so whole-heartedly committed to improving my gut I had overgrown bacteria that I didn't need, and I discovered I had a lot of other things going on that I was completely unaware of.

Fortunately, she created a path for me to correct a lot of problems I struggled with for years. I'm no longer wasting money on supplements I don't need, nor am I spending time and frustration doing things that don't work. I know exactly what I need to fix the problem.

Now what does this story have to do with growth, development, or coaching?

Last year I became certified in several assessments: Myers-Briggs (MBTI), Emotional Intelligence (EQi 2.0), and Leadership Circle Profile (LCP). While I believe in the value of all of these assessments, I find the LCP to be the most insightful for people. While all the assessments include a self-analysis, the LCP is particularly unique because it also includes a 360-assessment, so not only are individuals rating themselves, but they also have raters that include their leaders, peers, colleagues, and direct reports.

The value here is that when we rate ourselves, we provide an assessment consistent with how we see ourselves. But when we receive feedback from people who work with us, we have an assessment on how others see us, and that my friend is gold.

If you've been making consistent efforts to improve (whether its your gut health or your career) then having insights into what's really going on is priceless. Not only will it save you time, money and frustration, but instead of focusing on all the things you think you should be doing, you can start focusing on things that will get you the positive results you desire.
