The Best Secret for Making a BIG Decision

We all make hundreds of decisions a day: what to eat, what to wear, what to say, what to do or not to do. Why is it, then, that some decisions we can make so quickly and easily and other decisions that are a real bugger?

Often, the easy decisions come out of habit. It's likely that we eat the same things for breakfast, wear the same outfits in your closet, and take the same route to work. Our brains thrive on habit because it takes little effort to repeat the same tasks. But switch things up and HELLO! Our brains start sending red flags.

According to the Motivational Triad our brain has three jobs: avoid pain, seek pleasure, conserve energy.

Making decisions to do something different takes energy.

So how do we do it?

We do it by being  51% certain that the decision made is the right one.

Don't believe me? Check out Mel Robbins podcast where Steven Bartlett explains how he learned this from Barak Obama!

Let me say that again for you in the back... you only have to be 51% certain that the decision you are making is the right one.

WHAT!? It's not 90% not even 75%? Nope...51%.

When I made a life changing move from California to Tennessee two years ago, I did all the things:

  • Made lists,

  • Evaluated budget,

  • Weighed pros and cons ,

  • Shook a magic 8 ball!

At the end of the day I could have gone either way:  I could have continued on at my day job in Oakland finding comfort in my familiar north bay surroundings, or I could have made the big leap, stepping into the unknown.

I was torn-- I felt 50/50. The thing that changed for me to be 51% certain is that I knew deep in my gut that if I would have stayed where I was and looked back sometime down the road, I always would have wondered what could have been.

So take a moment today if you are wrestling with a decision that needs to be made.

What if you didn't have to be 100% certain?

What if you only needed 51% certainty?

What would you decide?

In fact, decide now, and tell me all about it! I love helping people move forward and make decisions that propel them into the next phase of their life.
